How to Use Color in Commercial Printing
12-30-11

Company colors are one of the main things which determine how customers will remember a particular business or company as. Not only in logo design and in sole commercial printing product design, colors also play a huge role in the construction and motif an office or a store, which explains why different types of trades and businesses tend to focus on different color shades and combinations. As for you, in order to understand more about how to make full use of colors in your different designs, here are some important facts regarding a few basic colors.
White. The main thing a person will think of when confronted with this color is purity and cleanliness. Often disregarded as a sort of non-color, many business owners underestimate the value and strength of using the color white in their designs. This color can represent a company that has pure morals and that has integrity, equipment that are safe and sterile, and a brand that is simple, yet promising. Often, this color is taken along with its contrast, the color black.
Black. While the previous color is practically a representation of all things pure and positive, the color black is a representation of some darker aspects. On the positive side, this is an elegant and formal color which can go with a lot of other colors, but on the other side, black may be used to refer to some darker concepts such as death, sadness, and uncertainty. Black and white together form a representation of perfect balance between light and dark, good and bad, yin and yang.
Green. This color is the universal representation of life and health. In businesses, this color is used in order induce a calming effect on the audience as well as to give the idea that the company is flourishing and growing with each passing day. At the same time, green is also used to talk about all things related to nature (green thumb, going green, etc.) so it is a good choice for companies that have the littlest thing to do with the environment and nature.
Red. This one is an aggressive color most commonly used in restaurants and eateries. If you are not convinced, one great example for this is McDonald's, which has been successful with its red and yellow double archers through the years. The main reason why red has a significant role in dining businesses is that red boosts metabolism and the appetite of people, which means that even if you just step inside a fast food store, you are already being subtly forced to buy some food.
Blue. As opposed to the color red, this one suppresses the human appetite. However, it is nevertheless one of the most commonly used colors, particularly because it implies trustworthiness and respectability of a company. If you are going to use only one color for your company designs, it is almost always a good idea to use blue, unless of course you are in the food business.
There is a whole spectrum of colors more that have not been discussed, but a single page will not be enough to name them all. Just make sure that the next time you choose some company designs and colors, keep in mind some of the things mentioned above for your future reference. In a rush? Go for black and white.
